"My artistic formulation is rooted in the praise for light’s dominance over all that surrounds us, mundane or extraordinary. Light, the messenger, the energy carrier, is the common denominator that gives us the perception of which we largely rely on to make sense of the material world. The ability to engage in narratives using bits of light seduced me into an artistic career marked by kaleidoscopic experiences in a mosaic of industries. Consequently, my approach lies in inter-disciplinary artistic fecundity, where eclectic arrangements empower centuries-old stained-glass expressivity with 3D+T virtues.
Sculptural* stained-glass, my own development, starts with a tridimensional vision of a window from which volumetric glass objects protrude into the void, carrying the light above its frame. The controlled freedom in which components are associated may echo Tzara’s Dada, but, more influentially, Dali showed me the beauty behind the prosaic realism. To make one takes hundreds of dedicated hours, engineering, adventure, and a taste for drama.
I am a tenacious advocate of stained-glass’ potential in modern arts and in contemporary architecture. My work involves, but is not limited to, stained-glass techniques and materials. It challenges the paradigm of the tradition, making a daring departure from its thousand-year-old-fashion, adding new features and borrowing characteristics from sculptures (glare, focal points, textured reflections, shadows, contrast enhancement, light screening, perspective, and pedestal installation).
What this approach aims for is:
- An invigorating departure from the bi-dimensional amplitude of traditional stained-glass.
- A magnetizing pursuit of light's flexibility (use of technology).
- A provocative, live dialogues with viewers (adding the time dimension).
I acknowledge that materials and methods of any kind are worth employing, as long as they support the story, which is always the starting point for me.
The paradigms are the main source of my inspiration. A paradigm is the guidance we employ to ensure much-needed security, comfort, and expedience. But such lenience can work against us. Habits make us dependent, and routines prevent us from staying alert, from observing. Then, the worst of all, we forget to question. Thus, I denounce it.
No desire runs in the mind of a photon; light tells not lie. It’s our understanding that needs adjustment. What my visual essays present to the audience is the excitement of an idea. I seek lengthy, engaging conversations with the viewers on topics from philosophy to science, and from childhood games to space missions. This is an era when reality defeats our intuition and exceeds our imagination. It is wonderful!"
